video camera usb connection
Can you connect Sony video cameras to macs using a cord that has a usb on one end and a firewire on the other?
I am trying to do a film project and can’t get the footage on my mac laptop. Is there anyway to connect the camera with the cord with a usb that plugs into the computer and a firewire connection that plugs into the camera? Thanks.
If you are using a miniDV tape based camcorder, then you must be using a firewire cable to connect the camcorder’s DV port to the computer’s firewire port. This is not a Mac issue – it is the same for other computers and operating systems, too.
USB will not work. USB-to-firewire cable/hub/converter/adapter things will not work. Specifically, in your case, you must be using one of the MacBooks made between October 2008 and June, 2009 or a MacBook Air. Neither has a firewire port and neither has an available expansion slot to add a firewire port. ALL other Macs made in the last 10 years – including the newest MacBooks that started shipping in June 2009.
So, just to answer your question directly, no, a firewire to USB converter cable will not work. iMovie and FinalCut (and Adobe products) will not recognize DV (or HDV) format video coming in though the USB port.
The ONLY acceptable workaround I can suggest is:
Find and use a Mac that has a working firewire port and the same version video editor you are using. Use it to import the video to an external hard drive. When the importing of the video is done, dismount the external hard drive and connect it to your computer. Start up the external hard drive, it will mount to the desktop, launch your video editor and open the video project file on the external drive.
