can anyone tell me how to tell a diferences between canon digital lenses?
I’m using canon digital 30D. Can anyone tell me what the number on the lens tells? and how to read them and what is the front number and the back number at the lens stand for? Thanks.
There are some numbers along the very front of any lens.
Some of them show the maximum opening available on the lens. These would have the letter “f” in front of them, such as f/2.8 or f/4.0. The SMALLER the number, the larger the opening, which is usually more desireable and more expensive.
Some of them show the single focal length or the zoom range of the lens and these are expressed in millimeters, like 18-55 mm, 70-300 mm or just a single number like 50 mm.
There are also numbers at the “12 o’clock” position on top of the lens that show the distance you are from the subject (once the lens is in focus) as well as the aperture (the “f” number or “f-stop”) you are actually using.
There would usually be one more number in the range of 52 mm to about 77 mm and this number has a circle with a slash through it. This is the diameter of the largest end of the lens and it shows what size filter you would need to fit on that lens.
Here is a mini-tutorial I made myself to compare focal lengths. This is NOT a lens test or a camera test! It is merely intended to show the difference between various focal lengths.
